There is no second chance in one ball

(This essay was written for Mr. Yun's counseling class assignment) There are many social roles that one must perform in modern society. I indeed have many positions to take charge of in my life; as a normal student, son of parents, representative of students etcetera. While performing diverse roles in daily lives, people often confuse their identities and lose themselves easily. Since modern society requires an individual to perform several social roles at the same time, more and more people confuse their public persona with their original personalities. I, however, have one social role which allows me to find myself and be myself: a baseball player of the school. I joined the baseball club when I entered the school, practiced much time with friends and seniors, and now became a captain of the team. Baseball always gives me inspiration, and I could develop myself playing baseball.  To begin with, no player is bigger than the team. This maxim well represents the appealing poi

This I believe: Power of Politics

When I was a 5-year-old kindergartner, my daily life had a certain repetitive pattern. I went to kindergarten in the morning, came back home after lunch, and played with friends until evening. Without some special cases, I came home before 6:30 p.m. at all costs and turned up the TV to watch my favorite animation show, ' SpongeBob SquarePants'  (definitely the best animation in my entire life). When the show was nearly over, my father got off work and came back home. Then I started helping my mother preparing for dinner. When we finished preparing dinner and sat together, it was almost always 8 o’ clock. My job at that moment was to turn the channel to 8 o’ clock news channel. Even when I was 5 years old, watching news while having dinner was one part of my family’s daily routine.   There were plenty of unfamiliar words on the news. Even though I could not understand most of them, I soon became interested in the news since I watched every day. I asked the meaning of unf

I t   was one cloudy day which was too familiar for David, a professional journalist for The Times. While he has moved from Manchester to London when he was first hired, he has not been abroad for a lifetime. David was appointed as the branch manager of The Times in Seoul, so he had to move to a new house. He said goodbye to co-workers in London and started to pack up. There were so many things on his messy desks and drawers: family picture, a humidifier, a calendar, and a bunch of papers. Even though Internet media has developed, David has collected all his journals in the newspaper. While packing, David began reading some of his best writings and looked back at his brilliant career in London. Just at that moment, he found a piece of folded paper which made him feel somewhat familiar. He could figure out that the paper was written in a long time ago, but he could feel some strange affinity for it. David read the first three sentences.  'This essay is an essay that I

What is Success?

Success is  a fake. There is no real success in capitalist society. While many people dream wealth, honor, and reputation as their life goals, these are all finite and incomplete concepts. People ideologically consider materialistic value as a criterion for success, but are rich people always successful? Can we say, someone who works for all day and earns a lot of money, is a successful person? Everyone has a different perspective on success, but if you think about success deeply, you will find the result is always a failure ; the concept of success was artificially made, while it actually does not exist. People who live for success will soon fell the same pain that Prometheus have felt and their lives will be something like rolling a rock to the top of a hill. As soon as you put the rock at the top, it will run all the way down to the opposite side of the hill . This will be a never-ending cycle of despair. As materialistic goals are formed by other people (or society) b

This is the personal review of "Arkangel," the second episode of the fourth series of anthology series ' Black Mirror'.   ---------------------------------------------------------- To describe the episode briefly, "Arkangel" is a technology that enables a parent to monitor their children. Parents can implant this technology into their children easily and control their children with a tablet. There are several functions in a tablet such as navigating location and pixelating images that would harm children psychologically. Single mother Marie implanted Arkangel into her  daughter Sara. At first, it seemed effective, but Arkangel became an obstacle in Sara's life. Thus, Marie stopped using Arkangel and let Sara grow without the use of Arkangel. However, as Sara enters into adolescence, Marie becomes tempted to use Arkangel again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ At fir

My memoir: Blissful young days

This is the second draft of 'I remember' essay assignment. The main structure of the essay did not change a lot from the first draft, but I elaborated on my experiences and memories. The basic rule of this assignment was to begin every sentence with 'I remember,' but I tried to make the essay concise. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   I remember the last day of my blissful young days. It was my kindergarten graduation day. I remember the bright faces of my friends, while their names stay in the deep dark side of my memories. When I entered the class, as usual, there was an awkward silence. It was an atmosphere that one cannot feel from the familiar place; especially, if the place is like another home for someone. Many parents came to celebrate the young ones and bless their bright future. Parents were smiling and so did children. I, however, remember that smiles of parents and children w

1st Brainwork: Intro

Hello! I am Seungmin Lee, the owner of the blog.   This is the first ‘brainwork’ posting on the blog. Let me explain the meaning of the blog title first. My English name is Brian, which is very similar to the word ‘brain,’ and I like to think about diverse topics. Sometimes, it is really hard to differentiate daydream and useful ideas, but I believe any kind of thinking broadens my perspective. I love the saying of Rene Descartes, “Cogito, ergo sum.” Well, someone may raise a doubt that thinking is a general act, which everyone does every day. That is true. However, people in nowadays do not try to think by themselves. Many people think just because they have to. I believe the passive thinking is not a real thinking. What I think as ‘the real thoughts’ are those created by a free will of the person to question and to know. Many Korean students, however, do not ask questions and raise doubts since educational system directed them to perceive information. Although I am a Korean st
